How to choose your roof colour
Restoring your roof is a great way to improve the aesthetics and increase the value of your house. A fresh coat of paint at the end of the restoration process will make a tired old roof look brand new again. But there is one question standing in between you and that beautiful new roof… “what colour do you want?”
Choosing the colour of your roof is a bit trickier than picking the colour of your bedroom walls. Firstly, you can’t slap a few rough patches on the roof and stand back with a glass of wine while you try and make a decision. You have to be a bit more practical about your approach and take other factors into consideration. We have a few tips below which will hopefully give you the confidence to make the right decision when it comes time to choose your roof colour.
Consider your surroundings
Take a step outside and take a look around. Where do you live and what colour and textures surround your property? Do you live in a natural environment with lots of trees and brush? Or are you in the inner suburbs with more manmade structures surrounding your property. The colour of you roof should suit your environment and not standout like an eye sore.
Here’s a few examples of how you can tie in with your surroundings:
• Ocean views – Blues, Aquas and Yellows
• Country life – Greys, Blues and Greens
• City living – Greys, Slates and Whites
• Gone bush – Muted Green, Light Brown and Slate
Also think about the colour of your house, window frames and gutters, your roof colour should compliment the rest of your house. Checkout our Colour Guide, it may help you put roof colour into perspective.
Dark gets hot
If you’ve ever owned a black car you’ll know that darker colours draw in the heat. You should take this into consideration when choosing your roof colour, especially if you live in a warmer climate! On the flip side this can save you a few dollars on your heater bill if you live in cooler areas.
Play it safe
Will your home be going up for sale in the near future? If you’re not planning on holding onto your property for years to come it may be best to take a look at your neighbours roofs for reference and follow suit. Neutral colours are usually the safest option and won’t hurt the resale value of your home when it does go up for auction.
